This article is about the Dawnguard quest. For the game you can play with children, see Hide and Seek (game).

Skyrim:Hunting the Monster

Speak with Gunmar in Fort Dawnguard and tell him you are ready to offer some help. He has learned of a possible monster. However, he doesn't know its exact whereabouts and will suggest you pay a visit to the vampire's last known contact to glean more information. The vampire's friend will be a notable of a random city (though not a jarl).

imported
Skyrim:Impatience of a Saint

You may have come across a few pages floating around during your regular Soul Cairn tasks. Jiub is located in the Boneyard side of the Soul Cairn to the southeast. Talk to Jiub at any time to receive the quest, and return all ten pages to him when you have them. In return, he will give you the Locket of Saint Jiub and a complete copy of Saint Jiub's Opus.

Skyrim:Kindred Judgment

Vampire Side: After obtaining Auriel's Bow, Serana tells you that it is time to confront her father. Head back to Volkihar Keep. Once inside, it is not possible to initiate dialogue with any of the other vampires, who will instead direct you to Lord Harkon. He can be found upstairs in the Volkihar Cathedral, where he awaits you and Serana in his Vampire Lord form. When you confront Lord Harkon, he will begin by insulting you for your disloyalty towards him. When Serana tells him that she will not let herself be sacrificed and that you are on her side, Lord Harkon will give recognition to your persuasive abilities by saying that "This dragon has fangs". He makes a final insult to Valerica, and chides Serana for becoming more like her mother. At this point, Lord Harkon will demand that you give him Auriel's Bow. If you refuse to give it to him, he will attack you. Likewise, if you give him the bow, he will betray you and attack. Because both dialogue options end in him attacking you, it is not recommended to give him Auriel's Bow, as it can be very useful during the battle.

Skyrim:Lost Relic

Speak to Florentius Baenius after you have completed the first Ancient Technology quest and a number of either Gunmar's or Isran's side quests. Florentius, guided by the wishes of Arkay as usual, will inform you: "I've been pouring [sic] over some of the tomes left here in the keep. Interesting stories, indeed. Seems the previous incarnation of the Dawnguard had, at one time, some interesting toys. Arkay and I think it could be a great advantage for us. You should look into retrieving it." There are three parts to this quest, each appearing as a new quest of the same name in your journal. Florentius will recite what was written in the old tomes for each of the three artifacts: Dawnguard Rune Hammer: "A powerful warhammer imbued with magic that places warding runes on the ground to obliterate it's [sic] wielder's foes." Dawnguard Rune Shield: "A magical shield that when blocked with, surrounds it's [sic] wielder with a holy aura that harms the undead." Dawnguard Rune Axe: "An axe imbued with magic fueled by the destruction of the unholy. With every victorious blow against an undead creature, its power grows."

Skyrim:Lost to the Ages

In ancient times, the Dwemer constructed four city-states led by the great research center of Arkngthamz in the Reach. Their purpose remains unknown, but the city-states were undefeatable and held their ground against attacking Nords for centuries. Then, in the midst of the First Era, all four city-states suddenly collapsed within three years. The Nords ascribed the destruction of the cities to the strategic genius of High-King Gellir, but many scholars suggested that the cities fell for other reasons—although the mystery was buried along with the cities and merely forgotten.

Skyrim:New Allegiances

When asking what can be done to help around Volkihar Keep, you may be directed to Vingalmo. Speak to him, and he will tell you:

imported
Skyrim:Preemptive Strike

Gunmar will inform you that he has located another vampire, hiding among outlaws, and will task you with eliminating it before it turns its companions into vampires. He will then mark a random location on your map: either a bandit camp or a warlock lair (including locations added by official add-ons).

Skyrim:Protecting the Bloodline

You will be asked to kill a vampire before it turns its allies. Fura Bloodmouth will say: "A feral-blooded has holed up with a group of bandits/necromancers. Likely wants to create a nest of broodlings." "We don't need competition for blood, and we don't want the mortals getting up in arms making things difficult for us." "Go destroy the feral beast before this becomes a problem."

imported
Skyrim:Rescue

After rescuing Florentius Baenius, speak to him, and ask "What can I do to help?" He will either refer you to somebody else, or he will explain: "Arkay has some grave news, friend. Your friend, kidnapped! A vicious night stalker rules over a group of [class] - seeks to gain leverage over the righteous. Arkay's never clear on life and death. Is [s]he still alive? There's always hope..."

imported
Skyrim:Rings of Blood Magic

Speak with Feran Sadri in Volkihar Keep, who sends you to retrieve two ancient vampiric rings, the Ring of the Erudite and the Ring of The Beast. The rings are held by two leveled targets in two random locations. After retrieving the rings, return to the castle to receive your reward (you get to keep the rings).

imported
Skyrim:Soul Cairn Horse Quest

This quest can only be started within the Soul Cairn. It can be started one of two ways, either by interacting with the distraught soul or by simply finding Arvak's skull. The soul who starts the quest can be found between where you enter and the large wall dividing the Soul Cairn. When first approaching him, you will hear him calling out to Arvak in distress, yelling, "Arvak! Arvak, where are you? Arvak, please come back! Come back!" and calling his name repeatedly. If you speak to him, he'll plead with you to help find Arvak. You'll have to ask him what he's talking about, and he'll explain, "Arvak. My horse. We came to this horrible place together. We were attacked by monsters, so I told him to run." He tells you how loyal Arvak is, and that the poor creature has been running for too long. He begs you to find Arvak's skull, giving you a quest to locate it. Arvak will then begin appearing at random and briefly running in the direction of his skull before disappearing again.

Skyrim:Surgery

Any time after installing the Dawnguard add-on, you may hear a rumor from an innkeeper or guard about someone new in Riften: "People say there's someone in Riften that can... change your face. Make you look completely different. Do you believe that?" Your quest journal will update with the objective to locate the face sculptor. Your map will not be updated with a quest marker, but if you travel to Riften, a guard will make a negative comment about the face sculptor, conveniently providing her location: "Take my advice, don't listen to that talk of the "face sculptor" down in the Ragged Flagon. "Face butcher" is more like it from what I've heard." Make your way to the Ragged Flagon, located within Riften's sewer network and accessible through the Ratway. Sitting alone on a bench is Galathil, the face sculptor you're seeking.

imported
Skyrim:The Bloodstone Chalice

Having completed Bloodline and accepted Lord Harkon's gift, speak to Garan Marethi to deliver Harkon's message. Though vague, he will understand and tell you about the Bloodstone Chalice, an artifact able to increase the potency of vampire powers. He'll ask you to follow him to the artifact; along the way, you'll come across Orthjolf and Vingalmo, whose interest in your task hints towards things to come.

imported
Skyrim:The Gift

After a few side missions with the vampires, you will be directed to Vingalmo (if you have a spouse as a mortal). He will talk about how he knows you have a spouse and then set you off on a quest to give your spouse Lord Harkon's gift.

imported
Skyrim:The Hunt

Fura Bloodmouth or Garan Marethi will send you to find and kill the Dawnguard spy masquerading as either a Traveling Bard, Traveling Merchant or Traveling Pilgrim. Do so discreetly. With a high enough speech skill (75) it is possible to persuade them to follow you by telling them you'll take them to the 'monster' they're seeking, or intimidate them into coming with you. This makes it easier to kill them discreetly if you take them to a location where no one will see you.

Skyrim:Touching the Sky

For the book, see Touching the Sky (book).

imported
Skyrim:Unseen Visions

As instructed by Dexion Evicus, your first task is to acquire a Moth Priest's draw knife from the Ancestor Glade northeast of Falkreath.

Skyrim:An Axe to Find

The blacksmith of Raven Rock, Glover Mallory, has plenty of problems, both with his affiliation with the Thieves Guild in Riften and his messy family affairs. Additionally, he's got a problem with an eighty year old ex-miner who borrowed his ancient Nordic pickaxe and forgot to give it back. Locate Glover Mallory near his smithy in the center of town and he will ask, "You haven't seen Crescius Caerellius have you? That foolish old man's taken my pickaxe again!" He will then explain that it's not an ordinary pickaxe, but a rarity in Solstheim. Since Glover has some shady business going on he will refuse to call the guards and will tell you, "Um, I prefer to handle these things on my own. Look, if you see Crescius, tell him to give me that pickaxe back and I'll pay you for the trouble." You can then ask what the pickaxe is good for and he will readily explain that it's the only tool able to crack stalhrim and that he traded that pickaxe with residents from Skaal Village.

imported
Skyrim:A New Debt

After the completion of the quest Reluctant Steward you will be made aware of a debt that Drovas Relvi owed to a money lender by the name of Mogrul operating out of Raven Rock. With the complete Bend Will shout at your disposal, it is now time to face Miraak.

imported
Skyrim:Azra's Staffs

Asking Neloth if you can aid him in his research may have him make a more personal request. He will explain his fascination with the staffs of Azra Nightwielder, the original Shadowmage, and will reveal that he has located one such staff in a random dungeon. The location is radiant, and can include dungeons both on Solstheim and in Skyrim. Skyrim is far more likely, as there are considerably more potential locations there. Retrieve the staff from the specified dungeon and return it to Neloth. He will reward you with a random generic staff from his own collection.

He has a chance to spawn at several specific spots all over the island of Solstheim as part of a world interaction. After defeating the madman you will need to travel to the location on your map to retrieve the Black Book.

imported
Skyrim:Black Book: The Hidden Twilight (quest)

There are eight chapters/zones here, so be prepared for a trek. You'll materialize in a room with a platform and two fonts of magicka. A scrye is past the platform, straight ahead. Activate the scrye and the door behind it will open, revealing a book on a pedestal: the next chapter. Before going in, search behind and below the pedestal to find a pod containing loot.

imported
Skyrim:Black Book: The Sallow Regent (quest)

After reading The Sallow Regent you will enter a considerably darker region of Apocrypha than most others. Quickly light a torch or cast a spell of Candlelight as entering the darkness will quickly drain your health. Upon entering you will encounter a small poisoned pool with a pod next to it containing a few books, some gold, and possibly a spell tome. If you are low on potions or health after the long trek through the Barrow, it is wise to avoid this pod as the tentacle will inevitably strike you. It may be possible to access it without injury using the Slow Time shout.

imported
Skyrim:Black Book: The Winds of Change (quest)

After reading the black book, you'll find yourself on a low path surrounded by water. Walk forward quickly to avoid the tentacles on either side. Up the stairs, you'll encounter a Seeker. If you take too long, or fight too far forward, you may attract the attention of another Seeker farther ahead. At the top of the stairs is a pool of poisonous water, which contains another tentacle, a Font of Stamina, and a Scrye. If your Conjuration skill is above 40, you will also find a spell tome for the Conjure Seeker spell here.

imported
Skyrim:Black Book: Untold Legends (quest)

There are five chapters: Chapter I is basically a corridor that leads to Chapter II, containing no enemies and only three soul gems in the way of loot. These can be found at the very end of the chapter, at the final bend just before the book that leads to Chapter II.

imported
Skyrim:Briarheart Necropsy

When you ask Neloth if you can help him with his research, he may respond: "I've been having difficulties with my heart stone experiments. Have you heard of the Briarhearts? They are fierce warriors of the Forsworn tribes. They actually remove their own hearts, and replace them with large briar seeds. It puts their lifesparks in direct connection to the natural forces. I need you to examine one of them. Just investigate as much as you can. I'm going to put this memory trace spell on you, so you won't have to worry about taking notes. I doubt you could know what was important anyway." He then reveals that he has been experimenting with similar theories but all his test subjects died in the process. Lastly, he will point you towards Skyrim and The Reach to find a specimen in a Forsworn hideout. Before you leave, he will cast Neloth's Memory Spell so you can remember what you observe.

imported
Skyrim:Cleansing the Stones

With the Wind Stone cleansed, return to Skaal Village and tell Storn Crag-Strider the good news. He will suggest you to do the same for the remaining four stones of Solstheim. Your map will be updated and show you the location of your targets: Beast Stone, Earth Stone, Sun Stone, and Water Stone.

"You would do that? I know he would listen to you. You've been out there in the wide world. You know its perils." She hopes you can convince him.

She has fallen on hard times since Raven Rock Mine closed and has spent all of her fortune made in the mine on drinking Sujamma and abusing Skooma. When you get near her, she will remark: "Don't pity me. And don't look at me like that. I know what I am." You can then ask her why you should pity her and she will explain: "Doesn't everyone pity the hopeless? Look at me... I'm no better than a beggar." She then proceeds to explain that she drank her entire fortune away at The Retching Netch, or that she used to. When asked what happened she will explain: "That fetcher Geldis won't even allow me inside. Said I was bad for business. If I want to spend my last bag of coins getting drunk, that's my business. What does he care?"

Once you have freed Cindiri from Miraak's spell, she will greet you with: "You look able enough to venture outside of town. Perhaps you could help me recover something precious that was lost?" When asked to elaborate she will explain that she had an important folio rebound at the First Edition bookstore. Unfortunately, the folio never made its way back to Raven Rock. When you ask her if it was aboard a ship she will say: "Yes, the "Strident Squall" or something like that. The damn thing sunk right off the coast of Solstheim. Can you imagine?" She then explains that one of the sailors managed to crawl back to Raven Rock and tell the guards about the wreckage. When you offer to locate the folio for her, she will be grateful and even refer to it as a 'precious heirloom' to the family.

Skyrim:Halbarn Favor Quest

Once the quest Retaking Thirsk has been completed, the Nord warriors of Thirsk move back into Thirsk Mead Hall. However, during their lengthy exile in Bujold's Retreat, the invading Rieklings turned the hall upside down, with much cleanup to be done. The blacksmith of the hall, Halbarn Iron-Fur, found his forge filled with slop and had to request assistance from Elmus to clean it up. Despite the terrible smell coming from the flames, he is still able to do some work, although he has more problems: "Cleaning out the forge was the easy part. But those blasted rieklings made off with most of my materials. And I can't forge air. You tend to wander around, don't you? If you come across any stalhrim or ebony in your travels, bring them back to old Halbarn. Help each other out." This starts the quest and adds an objective to your journal. You will have to gather ten samples of stalhrim and fifteen ebony ingots for Halbarn. Note that you will have to keep count yourself, as the quest will not update.

When you visit the apothecary you will find an unhappy proprietor, Elynea Mothren, wandering around badmouthing Neloth: "That ash eating wizard is always on me about his tower. It's not my damn fault the thing withered overnight." She then explains the problem. Apparently, something went wrong inside the tower and Neloth wants it fixed right away and will have no qualms firing Elenya if that can speed things up. When asked what she needs she will say: "Three taproots soaked in the headwaters of the Harstrad river. I'm an old woman. I can't possibly make that trip. It's way too dangerous. If you get some taproots, I'll pay you to dip them in the headwaters and bring them to me."
